WOW! Loved it! I rarely ever give 5 stars, but I would’ve given 10 if possible!I was intrigued by the description... rails to Nazi's... and followed Billie's story as if she were a dear friend. I kept thinking, what's next?You took me on a wild ride (in various modes of travel!) From that wretched school to the beloved Hofman's, to the railyards, crossing the US multiple times...I learned a lot about the American Indians and their plight during this time (skywalkers, code talkers, history, photography….Billie's comment that she wanted to "photograph all aspects of the human experience" sure came true! You wove so many stories into this novel!Endings sometimes cause anxiety cuz I like satisfying endings, not ones that make me scream, "NO! For the love of GOD, that's NOT the way it should end!" The Image Seeker was more than satisfying!My favorite line: "she had found that those with less seemed to be the people who shared the most. She often wondered if privation bred compassion." I've found this to be true in my life.Thanks for writing another GREAT novel!
Ms. Hughes, you have amazed me again! The tale of The Image Seeker, is another wonder!There are facts about our American history that have been minimized. One of these is life on our many reservations. Another is the plait of the poor before and during the Great Depression. In this tale that Ms Hughes has spun, she takes through many of these truths. Starting on the reservation in Northern Minnesota to life on the rails as a drifter. The shores of California to the alleys of Brooklyn. Across the plains into the dust bowl. Her tale weaves through streets in New York on to the Olympics in Germany and lifestyle during WWII. In each of these locations, different truths of human nature are reviled and explored.If I have managed to take you all over the map, made you wonder what I’m talking about, read this amazing tale. It will all come into focus.I give this author a top rating because I have not yet found an author that can spin a story like Ms Hughes can. You keep writing, I’ll keep reading!!
In a nutshell, this was one of the best books I've ever read. It is a slice of life, and a thick slice at that, that opened my eyes to a fascinating period of American and international history. After a long and difficult journey, the main character becomes one of America's first female photojournalists. Successfully competing in a man's world, and highly creative, she is finally recognized as being among the finest news photographers in the nation. The setting is one of our country’s most tragic eras--the Great Depression--and later moves to Europe where our heroine finds herself fighting the hatred of Nazi Germany while trying to let herself truly love for the first time in her life. This novel was both heart-breaking and heart-warming. Both tragically poignant and wonderfully inspiring. A great novel about a bold and brave woman by a bold and courageous author.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was genuine traditional style story-telling. The story moved along at an appropriate pace and was never boring or bogged down in sentimentality. Initially, it seemed that the main character's lifestyle (when she was traveling across country) was somewhat romanticized or superficial; but as I struggled with this notion, I realized that the tale being told held multiple story lines within story lines -- if a reader was not careful, she might actually walk away from this novel having gleaned something of value beyond mere entertainment. Five stars.
Amanda Hughes is such an incredible story teller. This story of Billie, a woman raised from humble beginnings, finds adventure and family wherever she goes while growing up during the Great Depression and during WWII. Ms. Hughes continues on her series of strong women making a life for themselves struggling against the repression of the time. You can tell Ms. Hughes does tons of research to help develop the storyline and her characters. Make sure to read the author’s note, as this will make the stories even more riveting and real. I can’t wait to read more about these Bold Women!
